Amber surprised me with how comfortable she was in front of a camera. The more I photographed her, the better I understood her own reality and struggles. This taught me about the power proximity can bring. Not just the power of having a close proximity to my subject with camera in hand, but also being in close proximity to someone for a few days in a row allowed me to really understand my subject and to capture a true reflection of my subject’s world. Although we are both students at the University of Michigan, we live very different lives and have different struggles.
